PressReader: News & Magazines App Reviews

Ok, but cant show full pages

This app has many features, except the obvious: you cant see a zoomed image of an entire page! What are these people thinking? So, I wind up missing a lot of stories that are below the half page view. Its annoying to have to swipe up to see the bottom of every single page. What a pain. Other newspaper apps show the full page in a small, but readable format. Big disadvantage.

Great App

Definitely a great application for downloading publications on the fly. Could have a better search utility though

I use this app everyday at breakfast

Great app! I read my local newspapers everyday at breakfast. Now on the iPad Pro the papers are big and very readable. Need a more convenient way to share an article with friends and family. Also need to be able to fill in people with whom I am sharing from my contacts list.

Great read

A great way to read the paper! Crisp color photos and easy to move through the sections of the paper. I have used this app for 10 years and it keeps up with tech advances.

Ease of use, powerful

I enjoy PressReader and use it almost daily. It does not crash, and gives a wide variety of views, suitable for my iPhone 6s Plus.

Awesome!

Fantabulous app! Allows me to stay on top of current events. The interface is easy to use and designed extremely well.

Not Too Obnoxious & Free

Clearly, PressReader is a well-written app. It doesnt crash (from what Ive noticed). There are two ways to read: 1) zoom or pinch-in to view an article as-printed; 2) tap an articles title to read single-column text, w/inline photos. Lets not to get too gaga about iOS functions (Reading aloud) which PressReader leverages; yes it is well-integrated with iOS & yes, you can have it read articles to yourself. As a single-paid-subscription reader, Im a bit annoyed by the app trying to get me to read other publications, both during setup & use (tho the latter can be turned off in settings). I keep downloads organized by issue/date, & so find the Library to be messy (so minus 1 *). As a free app, its good… Just takes a little getting used to & user acceptance/(sigh) resignation about certain "features".

❤️

This app has changed my life. Seriously. I love having a newspaper delivered to me everyday at a click of a button. The format is perfect. Its nice to have this option because I can also make the print as large as I want. Its as good as it gets!!!!

The problem

Yes, its a great app when it works. Unfortunately, I have been locked out, my credentials voided, for no reason several times recently--despite being a fully paid up NY Times home delivery customer who should have access as part of her subscription. Last time I was locked out for 10 days! It took 24 back and forth emails for me to finally speak to a human being who corrected the problem. In summary, good app, terrible customer service.

Price Increases when Purchase by App.

Normally, subscribe monthly at $29 and every so often switch to daily purchase for $.99. Website remains same price but app purchase now $39 or $1.99. After web newspaper purchased not sure if restore renews at higher rates or download previously purchased. Thus, no more purchases ... Period. When you wakeup that buyers stop buying maybe youll match price as previously.

I like it

Best app for reading the press from different countries.

Could be so much better

Id been waiting for this app since before the iPad could run it because of its Flash aversion. As great a concept as it is, it has flaws, which could easily be remedied. Frequently, whole sections of the NY Times are left out. Stories "jump" to the wrong page. I suspect that these are human errors; more often than not they occur on weekends. Support techs have insisted to me that those must be software errors, but I am not convinced. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is much user-unfriendliness in the accounts department, I have been knocked off my NYT account more than once. Still, its the best way to digitally digest a key news source with all its built-in clues to story significance in terms of placement.

Frustrating!

On February 1, 2016, I got a notice that my magazine (Living Buddhism) March edition was available. It does NOT show up under PRESS READER. Now I have to try to look at it from another way on my iPad. Thus, creating more trash for me to go through to see something that I have been paying for and accessing successfully since the last major screw up with this system a couple of years ago. Further, I still cant find either the newspaper or the magazine readily under religion, or by country.

A long term relationship

Weve had a subscription to this app for four years and, as with any relationship, weve had our ups and downs. The app crashes occasionally, sometimes the papers we subscribe to dont get delivered but in the end we have always found the downloaded versions to be good replicas of the original and the customer service to be excellent! We recommend this app all of the time.

Useful Aid to Studying Buddhism

A very useful adjunct to my monthly study of the Buddhism of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo; I take the print version of "Living Buddhism" but also routinely download the electronic version to PressReader, and make use of it in District Meetings when I forgot to bring the paper version. Ditto for the newspaper "World Tribune". The program is very easy to use, and has never crashed or lost content. Recommended highly!

Reader

I use the app to listen to my newspaper subscription while doing my chores. I wouldnt be able to keep up without it. The reader has troubles with acronyms which takes some getting used to. For example, itll read PR as Puerto Rico instead of the acronym for public relations.

Great on iPad Pro

The large high resolution screen is ideal for this App.

Magician

I get the NYTimes every morning via Pressreader and find it an indispensable way to start my day. The virtual copy of the newspaper beats blogs.

Press Reader

I really like Press Reader. It is the closest thing to having the New York Times in ones hands. It is easy to navigate, and makes it easy to read the articles one is interested in, while not losing sight of the layout of the page. It is preferable to reading the New York Times on the Times website.

Appeal Democrat

First... When I can download the Appeal Democrat to Press Reader, it is a very enjoyable reading experience! However, the Appeal needs to work with Press Reader to resolve some technical problems before I can justify giving a higher rating. Ive used the Press Reader for about 1-1/2 years. Ive been an Appeal Democrat subscriber for about 20 years. I pay for a one year subscription for my newspaper. Unfortunately, for no rhyme or reason... at least once within every 5 days, my newspaper does not download. It can take up to 4 days to get all 4 days to finally, magically download. I have to jump through hoops to get this accomplished. I go back and forth between signing in at the newspaper site then back over to the Press Reader site. I usually get a pop-up that says something about your subscription is expired. (Remember I pay yearly!) Ive grown to despise that pop up. So, until I can get my paper daily, I cant give Press Reader a higher rating. ☹️
